OVERVIEW: Brandubh will surely put your strategy skills to the test! Unequal forces and different win conditions balance masterfully in Ireland's mildly-thematic, highly strategic Tafl game. The Kings appear to be at a disadvantage with fewer pieces and unfavorable starting positions, but with four places to exit the board, they can sneak past the Ravens for the win! The Ravens are at a tactical disadvantage, but they start with a larger force. The right mix of strategy and intuition can lead to a satisfying victory!

HISTORY: Brandubh is a Tafl game variant from Ireland. Tafl games are estimated to be over 2,000 years old, the first forms dating back to 200 BCE. The name "Brandubh" translates to "Black Raven", hinting at the theme of Kings versus Ravens. Tafl is a Viking word meaning "table" and these games were the main tables games played in Europe before the introduction of Chess. Brandubh's game play and story was described and set to verse in "Abair riom a Eire ogh" a medieval-era poem. One legend states that Brandubh represents a battle with The High King (ruling from Tara) and his lesser Kings (from local tuaths) opposing and trying to escape a bloody coup.

Brandubh is presented in a suede leather pouch that unfolds to reveal a beautifully etched game board and luxury playing pieces. The rule booklet is made of an extremely durable composite paper laced onto the satin drawstring.
