HISTORY: Surakarta is an abstract strategy game from the island of Java. Natural disasters in ancient Indonesia makes dating this game difficult, although experts believe it existed before the Krakatoa event that occurred between 400 and 600 CE. Surakarta gets its name from the small village where it was first encountered by Europeans. Historically, it was simply called "the game" by local players. Surakarta is believed to have been played by villagers carving the board onto sandy beaches, sailors on their travels, and by the Royal houses. Legend holds that local rulers were required to prove their merit over a game of Surakarta.
Surakarta is presented in a suede leather pouch that unfolds to reveal a beautifully etched game board and luxury playing pieces. The rule booklet is made of an extremely durable composite paper laced onto the satin drawstring.
